Kohl opened his eyes with a start. Moonlight shone down upon him, and he could hardly believe he’d fallen asleep out in the open. Background chatter of drunk Estorians faded in and out of his awareness as he roused himself from his groggy sleep.
A sudden intake of breath from somewhere far below him brought his attention entirely to the present, and he looked down to where a pair of people were huddled together in the shadows of the cliff he’d fallen asleep on.
Kohl was beginning to grow used to the pirates’ exaggerated gestures and boastful conversations, but this seemed more discreet than usual. He leaned forward and pushed himself up into a crouch, ears straining to catch their words.
‘...told yer not to go there! Sea dragons, mermaids, and Rhea knows what else!’
‘Nah, the cove were empty. Just rocks and water. But...but…’
‘Sshh. Keep yer voice down! Don’t wanna bring the whole island down here, do yer?’
Narrowing his eyes, Kohl tilted his head. He slipped slowly down the cliff to get closer.
‘I knows. I knows. But...what if it’s…’
‘Yer can’t tell a shell from a pebble, Reg. Show me what yer saw an’ I’ll tell yer what is is.’
The two of them—shadows among shadows—turned and walked up the beach, the sound of their footsteps soon lost to chirping insects and the waves.
Kohl extended his wings to follow. He kept high above them so as not to tip them off to his location by the cool air which accompanied him when he flew.
From their fevered whispers, it seemed the pair were more interested in discussing whatever was in the sea cove that “Reg” had found to keep much of a decent lookout. To be fair to them, this part of the beach was nigh deserted, though he could hear the music, singing, laughter, and fighting from further down the beach. Kohl’s heart pounded at the thought of potentially finding more Arillians tied up in some damp sea cave. They seemed to have the highest bounty at the moment, and if these two had some trapped, he wasn’t sure if he could hold back his wrath.
He took a breath to calm himself. He didn’t need to think of that right now.
Kohl struggled to keep track of them, as their shadows slipped within the rocks and large boulders that lined this part of the coast, which grew in both size and number at the bottom of the large cliff. It was too dark to make out what they were heading towards, but Kohl suspected it could be one of any number of large caves and sea coves that littered the cliffs where it touched the water. Vast rock pools gathered here, and one of the many estuaries from inland split into tiny rivulets as they re-joined the sea.
With a quick flap of his wings, Kohl veered to one side, keeping out of sight as the two slowed their approach.
‘It were this one.’
‘Sure ‘bout that?’
‘Er…’ The first one, Reg, scratched his head and glanced around stupidly. ‘Or
